Tue Jun 10 2025Judgement
There are different types of judgement that come from legal arguments, court cases. One author list 4 types of judgement, another as many as 7 - at least, in the judgement of that author. There are different ways of judging in day to day life also. Jesus told is followers ‘Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.' (Luke 6:37) Judging including condemning is the prerogative of God alone. None of us is in a condition to judge another as God can. That is why Jesus warned us about the hypocacy of doing so. How can you say to your brother, “Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,” when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. (Luke 6:42) Whenever we come to a decison with regard to how we will act or believe we have passed judgement on the options. We have made a judgement on our own thoughts, our own situation. Judgements we make for our own lives are unavoidable. This extends to deciding on the company we keep when it is possible to do so. When we decide that there are reasons we do not want to spend time with someone we are making a judgement. This means judging this person, but not condemning them. This judgement has no implications for their eternal future. Usually there is no hate or fear of that person. It's just better we go our separate ways. When we decide that someone has beliefs and opinions which are contrary to our own then we are judging those beliefs and opinions. This is acceptable and common behaviour. Sometimes it can involve significant, deep and spiritual matters. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, for ‘Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?’ But we have the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 1:15-16) This might lead us to judging another Christian as to whther they are someone we should spend time with.
What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? (1 Corinthians 5:12) |
